Counselling approach

Therapy for Children, Youth and Adults

Connection, empathy, collaboration, and empowerment are at the core of the clinical approach at Gillian Tuyp Counselling. My focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship ensures that every client feels safe and unconditionally supported as they work towards reaching their goals. Attachment Theory is foundational in guiding my work with clients, leading them to explore their relationship with themselves, others, and the world. From there, I utilize an integrated approach in my work with children and families, drawing from Expressive Art and Play Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-based Therapies, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Safe and secure attachment relationships are the foundation of healthy family systems. A significant part of my work with families is to support parents and caregivers in repairing and strengthening attachment with their children in hopes of creating more understanding, connection, and joy into their homes. With individuals, a better understanding of childhood attachment relationships can inform ways to soothe and repair connections to self and others.

Having experienced anxiety and panic since my early teenage years, I have a keen ability to understand and validate clients in their pursuit of mental well-being. Much of my own self-care practice involves spending time in nature and connecting with animals, and I strive to bring these aspects of mindfulness and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) into my work with children, youth, and adults.
